Radioactive Waste
Radioactive waste is generated as a by-product of producing or using radioactive materials by industries such as mining, nuclear power generation, defense, medicine, and certain types of scientific research. TCU manages radioactive waste in accordance with state and federal regulations.
The Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for the proper storage of radioactive wastes generated until removed by the Radiation Safety Officer. Each laboratory generating radioactive waste will need to:
- Designate a location for the collection of radioactive wastes generated by their research.
- Place bags in a container strong enough to support the weight of the waste placed in them. Bags should sufficiently overlap the sides of the container to prevent their collapsing into the container. Each container should be labeled with the standard radiation caution symbol and the words, "Caution - Radioactive Material" or "Caution - Radioactive Waste". In radioactive waste disposal, separation of isotopes in the waste is required.
Radioactive waste is collected by the Radiation Safety Officer. Pickup requests shall be submitted to safety@tcu.edu. Labels may be picked up in SWR 437.
