Institutional Biosafety Committee

Main Content

The TCU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), appointed by the Chancellor, is the institutional body responsible for oversight of activities involving biohazardous agents and recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules that require approval for "biosafety activities" as described in governmental regulatory requirements. These regulatory requirements include, but are not limited to, the National Institutes of Health Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention Guidelines, select agents and toxins regulated by the Department of Health and Human Services, and the CDC's advisory document, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, recommending best practices for the safe conduct of work in biomedical and clinical laboratories.

The composition of the Institutional Biosafety Committee meets the requirements as specified in the NIH Guidelines and includes two community members who are not affiliated with TCU. IBC Members

The IBC oversees TCU's Biosafety in Research program which includes assessing biosafety containment level and other potential biologics. For additional information, review the Office of Research biosafety site or contact the Office of Research at research@tcu.edu.
